The holiday season is fast approaching which means lots of social events and get-togethers. It can be difficult to maintain your healthy eating habits during this time, but also it is important to enjoy the holidays without any guilt! Read on for our tips to help you achieve a balance.
Plan to have a light meal before heading out the door, to prevent yourself from filling up on party food only, which tends to be higher in calories.
Try and stick to meal with a good source of protein (such as lean meat, fish, tofu or lentils) and lots of vegetables. If you go for pasta opt for a tomato-based sauce as opposed to creamy sauces and go easy on the bread basket.
It can be quite easy at a dinner party or BBQ when you are surrounded by platters of delicious food to eat even though you may not actually feel hungry. You are also much more likely to graze across the whole afternoon or evening, ending up with huge portions over the day. Try to stick to a meals and a few snacks either side, and make sure you sit down to enjoy your meal and eat mindfully.
Try to keep sugary drinks such as soft drinks, juices and cordials to a minimum, in favour of water or plain mineral water. Keep alcoholic drinks to a reasonable amount and consider the mixers you use. Also remember to hydrate with non-alcoholic drinks in between.
Finally, do not feel guilty about your food choice. Try your best to follow the above suggestions, however if you wish to indulge a little then go for it. Try to follow the 80/20 rule as moderation is key. Perfection has no place in a healthy lifestyle, so do not deprive yourself, just keep portions in check.
