So you’ve taken the first steps in making a healthy change by investigating an initial appointment with one of our specialists! Congratulations! Learn more about exactly what that first appointment will look like….
Your first appointment with one of our dietitians will go for around 1 hour, with subsequent review appointments scheduled for 30 minutes.
The first part of the consultation involves getting to you know you, clarifying your reason for visiting and discussing what you are hoping to get out of the appointment.
We might ask questions about your past medical history, weight history (if relevant), medical investigations (if relevant) and a diet recall – what you typically eat during the day.
The more we get to know you, the more personalised and valuable our advice can be!
The second half of the consultation will cover tailored, actionable dietary and lifestyle recommendations that work for you. We often provide written information relevant to your situation to take home as we understand it can be a lot to take in all at once.
Following this, we discuss appropriate follow up and decide together on a time frame for you to come back and see us for review.
Your appointment will typically go for one hour. This allows time to discuss your issues and concerns and explore how your thoughts and emotions relate to undesirable behaviours, such as over-eating. We will identify the changes that you feel comfortable addressing and take a step by step process, using powerful tools, to create action plans that will empower you to implement change/manage behaviours that have tormented you for such a long time.

The first appointment is always longer (up to 1 hour in duration) and more comprehensive than our subsequent sessions, which go for 30 minutes.
You will really just need to bring yourself, any relevant documentation to your condition (MRI or x-ray reports, cardiovascular investigations). We recommend that you wear loose, comfortable clothing (exercise gear is great), and to bring along your referral if you have one.
Every exercise physiology appointment is different; however we’ll always cover the following:
From here, subsequent appointments are essential to check your progress, answer any questions you may have about your exercise program, provide encouragement, and refine your plan.
Being active is an imperative part of any health journey, and with exercise physiology services available at MHNS, it’s just another area that you can have taken care of by a professional.
